Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1928 in Monroeville, Alabama. She grew up as a tomboy in a small town, her father was a lawyer. Her best friend Truman lived with his mother’s relatives because he was abandoned by his parents. In high school Lee became interested in English literature. In college she contributed to the school’s newspaper and its humor magazine and eventually became the editor of the Rammer Jammer. Her Junior year she was accepted into the university’s law school, after her first year in the law program Haper told her family that she wanted to write instead of be a lawyer. She soon moved to New York City to follow her dreams of becoming a writer. She began writing her first novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Later that year, she joined her old friend Truman to help him with an article he was writing for the New Yorker.
To Kill a Mockingbird won the prestifious Pulitzar Prize and several other literary awards. The character of Atticus was based on Lee’s father and Dill was based on her best friend Truman. In the mid 1960’s she was working on another novel but it was never published. Haper spent some of her time on a non-fiction book project about an Alabama serial killer, which was titled The Reverend. But it was never published. Haper Lee is best known for her novel To Kill a mockingbird. It is the only novel of hers that was ever published. She continues to live a quiet private life in New York City. She avoids anything to do with her popular novel.
